Verify AC power supply and cord are OK. Turn the printer off, wait 10 to 15 minutes, then turn it back on. If the display remains blank, service is required.

On the HP LaserJet 4P Printer insert the appropriate media into the manual feed slot and it will automatically pull the paper.

Because the message refers to a non-selected paper tray, it does not require the tray to be filled for the printer to function. It is merely a reminder that the tray is empty.

PC-65Laserjet, Plus, 500 PlusThis is not a PC message. It is a PC B5 message. The printer is asking for the same paper length (size) that was requested by the software.
PC Install 4, 4M, 4Plus, 4Mplus, 4V, 4MVLower Cassette is selected as the paper source. The printer has detected that the Paper Cassette, which serves as a paper guide for the Lower Cassette, is not installed. Install (or reseat) Paper Cassette.
User maintenanceIIISi, 4Si, 4SiMXThis message appears after 200,000 pages have been run through the printer. It is a User Maintenance message indicating that certain parts should be replaced in the printer (or maintenance should be performed).

These parts are purchased via the Printer Maintenance Kit (part number C2062A) and can be obtained by contacting either an HP Authorized Dealer or the Support Materials Organization

The parts included in this kit are as follows:

Fusing Assembly

Transfer Roller and Transfer Roller Clip

Pick-Up and Separation Rollers

Duplex Pick-Up Roller (If installed)


These are User Replaceable parts. The directions for completing this maintenance come with the Printer Maintenance Kit and can also be found in the User's Manual (HP LaserJet IIISi printer) or Operator's Guide (HP LaserJet 4Si printer).

This message will appear again after every 200,000 copies and user maintenance is recommended at this point.

The message will be displayed on the control panel until it is cleared. The message is cleared by changing Service Msg=Off in the Config menu of the printer on the HP LaserJet IIISi printer or changing User Maintenance=Off in the Config menu on the HP LaserJet 4Si printer. Clearing the message will reset the internal maintenance page counter (not the same as page count listed on self-test) to zero.
Switching ToIIISiThis message indicates the printer's language is in the process of being changed from PCL to PostScript (R) or from PostScript to PCL.
PCL Print MenuIIISiIn PCL mode, this message appears for one second before the PCL Printing Menu appears when the Menu key is pressed once.
PCL ConfigIIISiIn PCL mode, this message appears for one second before the PCL Configuration Menu appears when the Menu key is pressed and held for about five seconds.
Clearable Warning Messages4, 4M, 4SI, 4Si MX, 4P, 4MPA "clearable warning" appears when the printer receives a print command that requires an option to be installed (such as additional memory or a PostScript SIMM). Depending on the situation, the printer will automatically reduce resolution, lower the level of page protection, compress the data, or abort the print job.

The printer first attempts to satisfy the print request by reducing resolution, then by lowering the level of page protection, then by compressing the data if possible. If it receives a job for an uninstalled personality (such as PostScript) or requires more memory than is available, the job is aborted. Clear message by pressing SHIFT and Continue on the printer.
W1 Image Adapt4, 4M, 4Plus, 4Mplus, 4Si, 4PThe printer received a graphics print file that was too complex to print at the requested resolution. The printer automatically processes the file in the highest resolution possible with the memory installed. Add additional memory to print the file at full resolution. Check the printout for loss of data or print quality. Clear message by pressing SHIFT and Continue on the printer.
W2 Invalid Pers4, 4M, 4Plus, 4Mplus, 4Si, 4P, 4MPThe job was not printed because the requested personality, such as PostScript (MP), was not installed. Install the language in which the files are sent, together with enough memory to support that language. Clear message by pressing SHIFT and Continue on the printer.
W3 Job Aborted4, 4M, 4Plus, 4Mplus, 4Si, 4P, 4MPThe printer was forced to abort the print job because there was not enough memory to support the printer language used. Add more memory. Clear message by pressing SHIFT and Continue on the printer.
W4 Job 300/Off4, 4M, 4Si, 4PThe job was printed at 300 dpi with page protection off. To print the job as requested, install additional memory. Clear message by pressing SHIFT and Continue on the printer.
W4 Job 300/Off4, 4M, 4Plus, 4Mplus, 4Si, 4PThe job was printed at 300 dpi with page protection off. To print the job as requested, install additional memory. Clear message by pressing SHIFT and Continue on the printer.

WM Mem Cnfig N/A4Plus, 4Mplus, 4Si, 4Si MXThe printer did not have enough memory when switched on to support the previous settings for I/O buffering and/or Resource Saving, probably because a memory SIMM was removed or a new personality SIMM was added Because of these configuration changes, resource saving or I/O buffering is no longer available. If these options are desired, print a Self-Test page. Check the configuration settings, then reconfigure them. To reflect any changes made to the printer.

* This message can also occur if the optional duplex unit has been added to the HP LaserJet 4Plus, 4Mplus printer.
WM Chk Mem Cnfig 4Plus, 4MplusI/O buffering and/or Resource Saving settings were altered when the printer was switched on because the printer did not have enough memory. This usually occurs after memory has been removed from the printer. (Check settings by printing a self-test.)
Wm Check Mem Mgt4Si, 4Si MXThere is still sufficient memory to accommodate resource saving, but the current setting cannot be satisfied by the available memory. Reconfigure the resource saving for the current personality.
WM [personality] Mem Full4Plus, 4MplusThe Resource saving memory area for the specified personality is full. Press SHIFT and Continue to continue printing (some data will be lost). The current job will print, but some resources (downloaded fonts, etc.) may not be saved. If this error occurs frequently, you may need to adjust Resource Saving settings.
