HP LaserJet Printers FAQ

If you need the user manual or software for your printer you can download it from the Printer Support section of the Hewlett Packard website.

HP 5L & Win95

Installing HP 5L into Win95, set of driver disks labelled as being for Win95, disk 1 of 3, 2 of 3 and 3 of 3, don't try to run from disk 1 - it is doomed to failure. When it asks for the disk, just put in disk 3. Manual doesn't mention this though.

HP Laserjet - No Default Printer

When attempting to print to the HP Laserjet 5L or 6L printer with the Host Based driver using Microsoft Works 4.0 for Windows 95, the program may give the following message -

"No Default Printer Selected. Use the Windows Control Panel to specify your printer".

Microsoft has created a self extracting file called Works4.exe, which resolves this problem. It is available from Microsoft's Website.

HP Laserjet 5P / 5MP and Multiple Copies

If you are unable to print multiple copies of a single document in Word 7.0.

SOLUTION : For the HP Laserjet 5P/5MP, 5L/5L-FS/5L-Xtra, 5/5M/5N printers, obtain the latest version (G1.30) of the HP Laserjet 5 Family drivers. Before installing the new driver, delete the currently installed HP Laserjet driver.

For the HP Laserjet 5si/5siMX printers, obtain the latest version (2.50) of the HP Laserjet 5si Family printer driver. Before installing the new driver, delete the currently installed HP Laserjet driver.

WORKAROUND : Until you can get hold of the new driver, delete the currently installed HP Laserjet driver. Then go into the Add Printer Wizard (Start/Settings/Printers) and install the HP Laserjet 4 Plus driver.

LaserJet 6L - Printer Not Found

When printing from Windows using the HP LaserJet 6L Host based printer driver, the following message appears : "Printer Not Found". The printer will not process the print job even though it is connected to the PC.

The solution is to uninstall the HP LaserJet 6L Host based printer driver and load the HP LaserJet 6L (PCL) driver (the difference is the PCL driver doesn't have the Status Window). To do this follow these steps,

  • Click on Start / Settings / Printers. Uninstall the HP Laserjet 6L printer.
  • Insert Disk 1 of the HP LaserJet 6L Printing System for Windows.
  • Double Click on My Computer, then the Floppy Disk Drive. Double click on the SETUP.EXE program.
  • Choose Custom from the installation screen.
  • Choose HP PCL DRIVER FOR THE 6L, Deselect the PCL STATUS WINDOW option.
  • Select CONTINUE, and swap the disks over when prompted.
  • Restart Windows.
